Frederick Lohse III

Fred sensei began training under Kimo Wall sensei in 1986, while a student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and is his student today. While living in Kagoshima, Japan in the early 1990s, he trained under Sakai Ryugo sensei and periodically visited Okinawa to study with Matayoshi Shinpo and members of Higa sensei's Shodokan. He also studies kobudo with Gakiya Yoshiaki, Matayoshi sensei's successor, and Feeding Crane gong'fu with sifu Liu Chang'I.

Other martial arts experience includes a teaching license in Ufuchiku Kobudo from Masada Keiichi and a short time training in Jigen Ryu Heiho, in Kagoshima. He has taught seminars on Goju Ryu and Matayoshi Kobudo in Japan, Holland, Canada, Great Britain, and around the US, and has written on the social and cultural aspects of martial arts training.

Fred sensei continues to travel to Okinawa and Kagoshima periodically to train and has been ranked rokudan by Kimo sensei and godan by Gakiya sensei. He joined the Boston dojo in 1993, and acts as the dojo’s chief instructor. He also does other stuff besides training, but if you want to know about any of that you have to ask.

Mike Larimore

Mike began training American Kempo in 1989. In 1996, he began undergraduate studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. During his first semester, he was introduced to Goju-Ryu Karate during a physical education class taught by Giles Hopkins-sensei and soon decided to train with the Kodokan dojo which offered additional instruction.

In 1999, Mike earned the rank of sho-dan and continued to train with the Amherst/Northampton dojo until he moved to Boston in 2001.

Luckily, he has been able to train with the great folks at Kodokan Boston since his move. Mike currently is a sandan, and is employed as an environmental engineer in the Boston area.
